GlenDronach 8 – The Hielen

Simple whisky this time. I was at a bar, well known for a good selection of whiskies, however I had blown my whisky budget and didn’t have much time before my plans started.

GlenDronach 8 – The Hielen was my pick. It’s about time, really. I had forgotten some of the younger malts and should catch up.

So this is aged in bourbon and sherry casks and released at a decent abv. Sounds good on paper. How’s it taste in my mouth?

Price: N/A at the LCBO

Region: Highland

Cask Types: Bourbon and Sherry Casks

Abv: 46%

Colour: 2.5Y 7/6

Nose: Varnish, nutty, nectarine, sugar syrup

Initially quite strong, chemical notes. Eventually that subsides with some nutty, sweet notes. Bit light, even with the nice abv.

Taste: Raspberry, honeydew melon, raisin, vanilla

Tart, more of the sherry casks here. Some nice fruit, bit of tropical notes, more fruit than I’d prefer.

Granted scurvy is my kink, so that may just be me.

Finish: Raisin, wood, anise, hazelnut

Strong finish. Wood is less chemical, lovely nuttiness and raisin from the sherry, and overall makes me feel better about having this.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going to be the most sherried masterpiece I’ve ever had, but certainly nice for an 8-year-old whisky.

Conclusion: If there was a person out there who never had a GlenDronach, and somehow I couldn’t get the 12 or 15-year-old, and the government didn’t pour it into our mouths upon hitting the age of drinking, then yeah, this would be fine.

Should you, like me, feel the need to go find it? No? Why would I spread this neurosis to anyone else? But if you have a chance, or it’s an option at a bar, I can’t say it’s bad, just that I think GlenDronach makes progressively better OBs.

For now.

73/100
