Tullamore Dew Special Reserve 12

Thanks to /u/Tsefly for the sample.

Irish whiskey is introduced to different people in many different ways. Most of us in our teens (I don’t condone teenage drinking, but I’m also not in denial).

Some of us have it later on, mixed with coke, and use it to get drunk. A small contingent of us enjoy whiskey so much we continue drinking it. A smaller group expands outside their happy place, and among them, we drink Irish whiskey every so often.

But that’s not everyone when you’re talking about Tullamore Dew. This lower priced brand makes it’s rounds among anyone who, at some point, wanted to get crunk, get drunk, and get fuuuuuucked up.

However to many of us, myself included, it turns out that Tullamore Dew isn’t a one trick pony. Or even a horse, but a distillery! Also they make multiple whiskeys.

Case in point: Tullarmore Dew Special Reserve 12. This is a blend of Irish whiskeys that are at least 12 years old. It’s triple distilled, like other Irish whiskeys. And from what I see, it does have grain whiskey in it, given the 10 states it’s Single Malt, and this one doesn’t.

However I’ve been known to be wrong before, and didn’t find anything that definitively stated that. Suffice to say, let’s just try it and see what it tastes like.

Price: $67.30 CAD at the LCBO

Region: Ireland

Abv: 40%

Colour: 5Y 9/8

Nose: Butterscotch, sour wood, candy coating, linen

Starts out with a standard rich, sweet note, but then gives way to a very sour, wood note. And candy. Lots of candy.

Maybe I’ve been eating too much candy.

There’s a clean note here too. It’s faint. Nothing too off putting. The sour note is odd.

Taste: Mango, rice, caramel, jujubes, oregano

Very sweet. Lighter taste. The triple distill isn’t as evident here. There’s no metallic note that I get from other triple distilled ones.

The rice note is a little off putting. Doesn’t jive with the rest.

Finish: Mango, oak, walnut, grass

Fruity finish with some dry… oh wait, it’s gone. Let’s drink again.

Fruity finish with some dry not… damn, gone again.

Short finish. Somewhat sweet, has some walnut and grass notes that stick around.

Conclusion: It’s better than the standard edition, so if you’re a fan and want to treat yourself, by all means go for it.

I do wish they left some more alcohol to it. I guess they couldn’t, and that’s too bad. It has some nice fruit, but can be a little on the sweet side. The flavours are starting to develop in it. And the nose, while oddly sour, has a clean note to it that I now associate with Tullamore Dew.

This may not be for me, but it may be for you. Worth a try.
