Over the year or so that I’ve been actually drinking anCnoc, it’s slowly gone from that funny distillery with odd pronunciation to yet another Highland that proves I’m not a fan of Highlands and finally to an interesting distillery.

So far they’ve brought in artists to designate two different special editions, peated their own malt, and have a mixture of NAS Vintages and aged stated malts.

From what I can understand from the very white webpage is this: The anCnoc 18 replaced the old anCnoc 16. Which I’m sure has a lot of people excited. Much like when Laphroaig went from 15 to 18, and less so when they went back.

As well they’ve left the alcohol level at a gentlemanly level of “not the fucking minimum”. They also didn’t chill-filter is at all, didn’t colour it, and aged it in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks.

Seems like a nice lineup. Also the lettering is purple on it, and who doesn’t like the colour purple? People who are an autumn. Dammit, walked into that one.

Let’s see how this tastes, shall we?

Colour: 7.5YR 7/10

Nose: Plum, orange, tangerine cake, caramel, wheat, pineapple

Initial nose has a lot of the ex-sherry casks. It’s not as strong as the 16 year was, however has some nice blends of fruit and vanilla going on. Just a light amount of wheat here that I wish had become cereal.

Well, me and Kellogg’s that is. But he hated sex so cereal was really the only thing he had going.

Taste: Orange, caramel, olive oil, almond, grape, oak

Taste isn’t too lively. Yes, there’s some nice ex-bourbon notes, however it’s all very distant. Hard to pick out.

Compared to the 16, this doesn’t have oomph. Or rather it’s hard to distinguish flavours and they all hide behind the caramel.

Finish: Orange, ginger, caramel, pepper, grassy, smoke, dry

Nice finish, good amount of dry notes to clear the palette. Like at a construction yard and you buy the last cinder block.

Again, a little distant. Not as rough as the taste, but not living up to it’s retired little brother. Which some of us can relate to (what a jerk Rodney is).

Conclusion: Sadly what I was looking for was an improvement, or a continuation on the 16 year. Instead I feel that I’ve gotten something that may have been over oaked, or not cared for as much, or that didn’t reach those lofty heights.

It’s a nice sipping dram. Would I aim for it over some others? No. Do I miss the 16? Yes. Do I ask Socratic questions? Sometimes.

I want more from this. And I hope the 22 does that for me when I get a sample of it (or order it at a bar).
