Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel [Review of a New Bottle]

Oh… I got caught up quoting something so much that I didn’t set it up. Let’s start again.

And you may find yourself asking: Hasn’t TOModera reviewed Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel before? Well yes he has. And no one had any issue with it at all.

For once.

However it’s a hand selected barrel. There’s a different one at every single store. And even though I don’t know which store I got the first one, I traded for a second sample to see the difference.

And I really don’t know how I got here, because I really don’t know which store got handsy with this barrel.

Wait, they don’t do that? Alright, I mean hand selected.

For those of you who didn’t read it, Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel is one of the 50 whiskies that go into the Blend that is Crown Royal. Specifically it’s the Coffey Rye, a bolder component that, like our sun, is able to shine it’s light down and make everyone happy. And alive.

The Coffey Rye (made in a Coffey Still, created by Andreas Coffey, and having nothing to do with Coffee) is then placed in American New Oak casks, and eventually bottled at 103 proof. Then some owners get handsy with the barrels and picked out the one they like.

Pretty good for having to go to Gimli, Manitoba. Oh, wait, they can probably send them samples all the way to Texas.

None the less, let’s see how this tastes, shall we?

Abv: 51.5%

Colour: 5Y 8/6

Nose: Butter, corn, alcohol, caramel, lime zest, sour cream icing

A lot less cereal and brown sugar here. Instead it’s a little rougher. There’s a sour element that, after eating some carrot cake, realize is sour cream icing.

You people are making me fat.

That’s a joke, I’m making me fat.

This has more corn and more butter notes. I like this nose better than the last one.

Taste: Pastry, egg, mint, lime zest, orange

Wow. My work keeps having these custard tarts in the office, which I can’t eat. This must be why they are so popular.

And now to cry.

Good mix of fruit and mint too. The two halves don’t exactly mesh well, but all in all it’s a nice dram. Different and unique.

Finish: Butter, algae, butterscotch, gravel, papaya

And more butter. If you don’t like butter then… holy shit, what is wrong with you?

Also this may not be the dram for you.

Little bit of earth and that smell you get from being in the lake. It has promise, but I think this one barrel may have needed more time.

Conclusion: Much better hands on this one. While it’s not a great dram, it has quite a few nice parts. Great buttery elements, interesting taste, and a finish that probably was sacrificed to ensure it didn’t lose the latter parts.

In comparing my notes, the last one was very cereal forward, hot at the finish, and dryer. They are very different drams. If this is what Crown Royal can normally do, I’d buy it.
