Screw it. Let’s go on a kick.
No, not a Rye kick, though given the last whiskey I reviewed was also High West, and was also mostly rye, who would blame you for thinking that?
Pol Pot, that’s who.
No, instead I’m going for a few whiskies from High West. And sadly enough, I’ve missed out on one of their core line. Today I’m reviewing High West Rendezvous Rye.
But what is it? Well it’s alcohol.
So that’s done, let’s move… oh, wait, what’s it made up of. That’s more of a better question.
So this whiskey is a blend of two different straight rye whiskies: LDI and Barton are the sources.
Again, I’m blown away at the quality of the distiller. Other distilleries just go to one of them and laze about and stuff. I guess. I don’t really know. And no one would judge me for that.
Other than Stalin.
Anyway the blend and mashbill ends up quite interesting:
- LDI straight 6 year rye (95% rye, 5% barley malt)
- Barton straight 16 year rye (90% rye, 10% corn, 10% barley malt)
So again (because I just did Bourye) we have young and older ryes. The idea being that the younger rye will have the big, bold spice, and the older will have the developed aromatics.
So, let’s see how it tastes, shall we?

Colour: 10YR 6/10
Nose: Honey, oak, butter, nutmeg, cardamon, bran muffin, anise
Starts out sweet, and then the spices start up. Given more time, there’s this baked sweets note that I associate with muffins.
Because I like spices in my muffins. And you know who doesn’t?
A bunch of people who are okay and shouldn’t be judged, that’s who.
It’s quite the dual for spices here. I almost wish more Barton was used to amp up some floral notes.
Taste: Orange, butter, nutmeg, caramel, grassy, watery
Ah, there’s more of the floral… is what I would say if there was some. Instead there’s more citrus, and we all know what I feel about citrus.
I’m not the biggest fan, but balanced doses is nice.
And that’s the case here. It’s more watery than I would like, but come on. They gotta make a buck, and it doesn’t detract too much.
Finish: Gravel, cardamon, dry, pear, lemongrass, mint, caramel
And like a bad dismount where the gymnast falls, screams out racial epithets, and then fucks her coach on live television, there’s gravel flavour.
And you know who would enjoy watching that?
Fucking everyone, that’s basically amazing entertainment.
Moving along, I like elements of the finish. I just can’t get past the gravely parts. It’s too rough. Maybe I worked on cement for too long. Maybe I’m bitter. Maybe the bottle had something in it.
All that aside, from this dram, and this one flavour, I cast the dram to hell.
Conclusion: Wait, no, that’s stupid. It’s still a good daily drinker! Heck, it’s a great start to a dram.
I mean, sure, it wasn’t floral like I love, but who cares what the fuck I love? It’s a solid dram with elements I think can (and are, in other whiskies they sell) be fixed. A rough finish, a good nose, and a nice taste. All of these things should be standard in ryes, and sadly (as a Canadian) they are not.
So if you’re looking for a good entry level, or just enjoyable dram, buy this one.
