Longrow Red 12 – Pinot Noir Cask [Mystery Review]

Longrow Red 12 Pinot Noir 1.jpg

Thanks to /u/stinkysauce for this dram. You gave me a great title.

And that’s all I really ask for, really. He also noted that it’s blood. Which is helpful. It’s hard to find proper labeling on these types of things.

So, let’s see how /u/stinkysauce ‘s blood tastes, shall we?

Longrow Red 12 Pinot Noir 2.jpg

Price: Free, cause it’s his blood, and it’s in him to give (N/A in Ontario)

Region: Uh… I don’t know. Where did your parents make you /u/stinkysauce ? (Campbeltown)

Abv: High. That guy must be drunk all the time. Especially after he asks where he was conceived. (52.9%)

Colour: 5YR 4/8

Nose: Peat, pineapple, licorice, strawberry, pear, smoke

It’s peated. Can tell that as soon as I pour it.

Doesn’t smell like a Caol Ila or a Lagavulin. Nor does it have the intrinsic weak peat smell of Highlands. I feel like I’ve had this before, when my numbers were high and I didn’t know any better.

No iron in here. Dude, eat a steak, your blood is low on iron!

Taste: Pepper, steak spice, anise, butterscotch, plum, soy sauce

Less red than I was expecting. Maybe he really needs a steak. Send him steaks.

Speaking of steak (segue!), this one has some nice pepper notes to it. Also good umami notes. My wife thinks there is sherry in it, though I disagree because the couch is comfortable.

Not frog. There’s not enough salt. And not Port Ellen, as I’m currently not having a 4 day erection.

Finish: Peat, butter, lemon cookie, cumin, pepper, sea salt, peanuts, dry

Alright, I think I know what this is: It’s not /u/stinkysauce ‘s ass blood. That has more of a different tang to it.

No, this one is more of a whisky. Which I’m happy about. Specifically a Scotch. Otherwise I’d have to post in /r/blood, and they may not allow reviews.

Nice dry finish on this one. Complex, lingers, and quite tasty.

Conclusion: Overall I liked this dram. My wife and I are split on it, however I’m the one writing and she’s the one being right (probably), so I’m going to give me guess.

First though, the overall: It’s a good dram. Decent amount of complexity, nice fruit notes, and it is peated which I’m a sucker for. The finish is bonkers good, so I enjoyed that quite a bit. And the nose had some sharp left turns (strawberry) that really made it special.

I’d buy this. If I could. Or if the LCBO didn’t have a Peat tax.

Guess: Ardbeg Corryvreckan

Actually: Longrow Red 12 – Fresh Pinot Noir Cask Finish
